Hi everyone!
Welcome to my blog, where I will talk about shower stalls and things related to it. And by this I mean installation, repair, decoration and everything else that is related to bathroom.
You’ll be able to find a lot of useful tips and tricks as well as pointers in buying and shower stall installation. I don’t have to tell you that you won’t need someone to help you work on this, every information you find here is meant to help you do everything by yourself when it comes to shower stalls.
I urge you to leave your comments, whether you want to ask questions, criticize or share your own experiences.
John
John,
I have an existing ceramic shower stall & I’m thinking of replacing it with the same size (3) piece preformed fiberglass stall. I realize that the existing tiles & sheetrock have to be removed around the base in order for the new base to fit, but is it necessary to remove the entire sheetrock & tiles around all three sides? Or can the fiberglass sides cover the ceramic tile. If this can be done, how do you close the gap between the new base & the fiberglass sides? I think I’m answering my own question that all sides should be removed but I just want to confirm it.
Thanks,
Milt
Hi Milt,
I would say it all depends on the actual size of your new fiberglass stall. If the dimensions are exactly the same as your previous ceramic shower stall, you could remove the tiles and sheetrock from one side only. Then you can use either silicone caulk or durabond setting compound. Be sure to apply a silicone that can be painted so you can paint over it and hide the gap perfectly. If you choose to go with the durabond (which won’t be harmed by water, ever), be careful when applying it because it can’t be sanded.
What would I do? Remove one side and see if the new stall fits perfectly. If it doesn’t fit perfectly, I would think about how I can close the gaps and would that be alright with me (and the spouse, of course
Then it’s pretty easy to make a final decision.
I hope I helped,
John
